WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29), the only Latina in Congress with a background in STEM, released the below statement following the Senate’s action to remove the Artificial Intelligence (AI) moratorium provision from Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill. The AI moratorium provision would have blocked states from innovative uses of AI or establishing or implementing laws that protect Americans from current and future challenges related to AI and other emerging technologies.

LOS ANGELES – Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd Lyons demanding answers about ICE’s decision-making process behind sending immigrants to different parts of the country, its actions to arrest immigrants at their court hearings, and the associated costs to the taxpayer. 

ADELANTO, CA – Today, Rep. Luz Rivas (CA-29), Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28), Rep. Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Rep. Mark Takano (CA-39), and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) were granted entry to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in order to conduct oversight guaranteed by federal law. The lawmakers demanded answers following reports of unlawful immigration raids, due process violations, and alarming allegations that U.S. citizens may have been wrongfully detained.

Congresswoman Rivas’ bill will help rebuild the STEM workforce by fostering educational and apprenticeship opportunities for students who come from diverse and untraditional pathways.
