Congresswoman Luz Rivas Votes Against Partisan Republican Resolution that Targets Los Angeles
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29), the first Latina to represent California’s 29th Congressional District and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, released the following statement following House passage of partisan resolution that targets Los Angeles and California:
“The Republican resolution that passed today is a distorted and partisan attack on Los Angeles – the city I proudly call home,” said Congresswoman Rivas. “This resolution fails to name the President as the main culprit in escalating tensions in Los Angeles and across California by ignoring the fact that President Trump mobilized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across Los Angeles; deployed the National Guard and Marines against Americans; handcuffed Senator Alex Padilla for demanding accountability; and made threats to arrest Governor Newsom. This politicized, Republican resolution sanitizes the truth that the President’s actions sowed more chaos, violence, and unrest across our communities. I joined my fellow California House Democratic Caucus colleagues in reaffirming support for the right to peacefully protest, condemn any instigation or acts of violence that may occur at protests, and condemn the President’s authoritarian and unnecessary escalations of force.”
BACKGROUND:
H.Res.516 is a House Resolution introduced by Republican Congresswoman Young Kim (CA-40). Congresswoman Kim’s resolution fails to describe that the events that took place in Los Angeles were manufactured by the Trump Administration in pursuit of a political narrative and agenda.
In response, Congresswoman Rivas co-introduced a resolution with Congresswomen Nanette Barragan (CA-44) and Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) that condemns President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and Marines during the Los Angeles protests, while reaffirming support for state and local law enforcement and our First Amendment right to peacefully protest.
This resolution provides a fact-based response to the distorted, partisan, and misleading resolution that the House voted on this week.
The H.Res.516 passed in the House 215-195, with Congresswoman Rivas voting against it. Congresswoman Rivas spoke on the House floorin opposition to Congresswoman Kim’s resolution.
