Congresswoman Luz Rivas Statement on Supreme Court Decision Paving the Way for Trump to Rule by Executive Order, Including Ending Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29), the first Latina to represent California’s 29th Congressional District and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision in Donald Trump vs. CASA, Inc., paving the way for President Trump to rule by Executive Order and end fundamental American rights, including birthright citizenship:
“The Supreme Court is wrongfully paving the way for Donald Trump to continue his assault on our values and rewrite the ending to the American story – including keeping the door open for his Administration to end birthright citizenship and exclude immigrant communities like mine in the San Fernando Valley from that story.
“By limiting the power of federal district courts, the Supreme Court is creating an inconsistent legal process that will only empower Donald Trump and his Administration to unilaterally sow chaos for families and create lasting harm in communities across the country.
“The United States of America was founded as a country built on checks and balances to prevent abuses of power from a single individual. I will continue to fight for my community, protect birthright citizenship and challenge Donald Trump’s attempts to redefine our democratic values and what it means to be an American and our democratic values.”
