Congresswoman Luz Rivas’ Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order to End Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29), member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the first Latina to represent California’s 29th Congressional District, released the following statement after President Trump issued 10 anti-immigrant Executive Orders, including an Executive Order to end birthright citizenship:
“The Fourteenth Amendment is clear that any person born in the United States is a citizen of the United States, and no one, not even President Trump, can take that birthright citizenship away from them,” said Congresswoman Luz Rivas. “Cruelty toward immigrants was the focus of President Trump’s first term, and just hours into his second term, he has shown that it will continue to be his focus. This is not what our country stands for, and we will not let President Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric divide us further. My Congressional Hispanic Caucus colleagues and I will fight for our immigrant communities and the unalienable rights that are guaranteed to them under our Constitution. I look forward to this over-reaching Executive Order being swiftly and rightfully challenged in court.”
Background
On the first day of his second term, President Trump issued 10 Executive Orders related to immigration, including declaring a national emergency at the southern border, removing birthright citizenship, ending asylum, reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, continuing construction of the border wall, and suspending refugee resettlement.
