Congresswoman Luz Rivas’ Statement on Hurst Fire, Wildfires throughout Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES — Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) released the following statement about the ongoing Hurst, Palisades, and Eaton fires ravaging through Los Angeles County:
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the fire crews and first responders who have worked non-stop since the Hurst, Palisades, and Eaton fires broke out to keep our communities and our neighbors safe.Their bravery is keeping residents across the region safe, and I urge residents to follow any instructions from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), including evacuation orders.
“I am thankful for the quick action and coordination from our partners on the federal level, including the Biden-Harris Administration and FEMA, as well as our local and state partners — including Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles, and Governor Newsom — for working quickly to combat these fires and providing resources to Angelenos. And thanks to President Biden’s Major Disaster Declaration, residents who were impacted by the fires can immediately access funds and resources to begin recovery. This includes assistance with evacuation costs, housing, and recovering lost assets.
“I will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to advocate for federal funding to make sure residents of California’s 29th Congressional District are safe and have the resources they need to get through, and quickly recover from, this emergency.”
Background:
The Hurst Fire broke out on the evening of January 7, 2025 in Sylmar on the northern end of California’s 29th Congressional District.
On January 8, the State of California submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) declaration for the Hurst Fire burning in Los Angeles County, which was quickly approved.
Additionally, Congresswoman Rivas joined Senators Padilla, Schiff, and 46 bipartisan members of the California delegation in urging President Biden to sign Governor Gavin Newsom’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration. This request was quickly signed, allowing people impacted by the Hurst, Palisades, and Eaton fires to immediately access funds and resources to begin the recovery process.
