Congresswoman Luz Rivas Votes NO on GOP Takeover of Free and Fair Elections

February 11, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) released the following statement after voting NO on Republicans’ bill that disenfranchises millions of Americans from having their voices heard on election day:

“I voted against Donald Trump and Republicans’ power grab to commandeer free and fair elections. Instead of working with Democrats on solutions to address the affordability crisis, Republicans are continuing to push false narratives about voter fraud to place barriers between voters and the ballot box. These barriers disproportionately block millions of women – including many across the San Fernando Valley – from participating in elections because they may have a different name than the one on their birth certificate.

“This Republican bill is voter intimidation and voter suppression at its core. I will continue fighting Donald Trump and Republicans’ attempts to impede on anyone’s access to vote.”

Background:

Republicans’ bill – S. 1383, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act – would:

  • Require voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC), in person at an election office, each time they want to register to vote or update their registration.
  • Create serious risks to voters’ privacy and security through expansive data-sharing requirements, including the submission of voter registration lists to the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Effectively dismantle widely used and trusted voter registration methods, including mail-in registration, online voter registration, and voter registration drives.

The SAVE America Act passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 218-213. Congresswoman Rivas joined 212 of her House Democratic colleagues in voting against the bill. Congresswoman previously voted against the SAVE Act on April 10, 2025.
